A Baygall, Not a Bagel

Seabranch Preserve State Park, Stuart, Martin County

baygall
A baygall is a swampy place where bay trees — sweet bay, swamp bay or in this case, loblolly bay — are the dominant species, plus other moisture-lovers like red maple and dahoon holly. It's rare habitat in Florida, but Seabranch Preserve State Park has 169 acres of it. That is the trail through it, narrow and rough, in the photo above. It helps to be a little hardcore to explore it, but it's worth the time and effort.
