Part of the effort bring life to this channelized stretch of the Loxahatchee River was the creation of a series of oxbows. An oxbow is a sharp bend in a river or creek shaped like the collar worn by an ox. The course of the Loxahatchee couldn't be changed, so the next best thing was to create a few oxbow-shaped islands and cover them with mangroves, the backwater sheltered from the main channel. Just to note, we borrowed the headline for this page from a 1943 movie of that title starring Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Henry Morgan and Anthony Quinn. It was nominated for Best Picture but lost to Casablanca.
