In The Beginning ...

Seabranch Preserve State Park, Stuart, Martin County

trail beginning
This is near the park entrance where we began our hike. It's sand pine scrub, and the trail is narrow here. Farther in, the trail begins to widen and the surrounding more open, more scrub-like. Sand pines are one of two species of pines commonly found in South Florida mostly in coastal scrub areas. The other major species is slash pine; the two are easy to identify, with sand pines being a little smaller and fuller, with shorter needles and the bark is less coarse. They're also more fire-dependent than slash pines and are shorter lived.
