Those Flowers Don't Bite ... Really

Okeeheelee Nature Center, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County

pond
This pond was the first carved out of Okeeheelee after the county took ownership of the land. In its prior life, it was a stand of melaleuca trees, an invasive imported from Australia. Now, it's a magnet for variety of birds and other wildlife. Wild flowers, including coreopsis, duck potato, pale meadowbeauty and water pimpernel have been spotted along its shores. Things change over time but at our last visit the shore was covered with small yellow flowers called horned bladderworts. They are carnivorous but don't worry. They're a threat only to tiny, microscopic critters. They don't bite!
