Florida Scrub, Natural, Not a Golf Course

Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Hobe Sound, Martin County

scrub
This is scrub, remnants of an ancient beach dune. It is among the rarest of natural habitats in Florida because of its proximity to the coast and relative ease of development. This particular tract is in the northeastern section of Jonathan Dickinson State Park near where Camp Murphy, the World War II era top secret Army base. It is home to rare plants and animals, some found nowhere else in the world, yet former governor and current U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., saw this precious land as a fine place to build a golf course. Our parks are a sacred trust each generation hands off to the next and we must remain vigil to protect them. Almost all remaining scrub is within various parks and preserves and if we let our guard down, it will be gone, stolen from us.
