anhinga with fish

An anhinga with fish, photographed at along the Anhinga Trail, Everglades National Park in April 2025.

Few things are guaranteed in nature, but spotting an anhinga along the Anhinga Trail comes pretty close. You'd almost have to walk the trail with your eyes closed not to see one of these large, beautiful birds. This anhinga speared his catch using its long, sharp bill. Spearing it is one thing; eating it is another. Our feathered friend needs to maneuver his catch so he can swallow it whole, head first, and that can involve tossing the fish several times almost like a juggling act to position it just right. The Anhinga Trail at Royal Palm is the first real taste of Everglades National Park for most park visitors. Let's get on with our tour.
