In the Beginning ... A Hammock

Yamato Scrub Natural Area, Palm Beach County

hardwood hammock
You get out of your car, jaunt over to the trail and a few hundred yards into the preserve, this is what you see: a hammock consisting mostly of live oak trees and cabbage palms. It's almost as unscrublike as one can imagine. Keep walking past the two basin marshes and you finally start to see something resembling scrub. Like all of this land, the workings of an ancient estuary and beach thousands of years ago determined what grows on this land. Little sand was deposited here, allowing the oaks and palms to thrive in soil richer in nutrients and capable of holding moisture — Photo by David Sedore
