Despite some serious geological action going on within the park — we're referring to those solution holes seen in our last stop — there is no cave in Shark Valley, at least not in what we think of as a cave. The Otter Cave Hammock is a quarter-mile trail through hardwood a thick canopy of hardwood trees. The underlying limestone rock is exposed or close to the surface throughout the quarter-mile trail. A short section of boardwalk bridges a a small stream, but the trail can be a wet and mucky walk at times. You can see a puddle in the foreground of this photo. So why the name? The solution holes referenced above are the inspiration for the cave part of the name.
