Unique is an often misused word, but Florida's Everglades truly is unique. There really isn't another place like it on the planet. Stretching from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay, the Everglades is, as Marjory Stoneman Douglas called it, a vast, slow-moving river of grass. There are plants and animals here that can't be found anywhere else. It still exists only because efforts of conservationists like Mary Mann Jennings, Douglas and a multitude of ordinary citizens who fought to preserve it. It's a debt we can only repay by protecting the Everglades for future generations to enjoy and appreciation. We took this photo from the eastern side of the Loop Trail not far from the visitors' center.
