The Wild and Scenic Loxahatchee

Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Hobe Sound, Martin County

The crown jewel of Jonathan Dickinson State Park has to be the Northwest Fork of the Loxahatchee River, federally declared a Wild and Scenic River in 1985. The Loxahatchee originates in Palm Beach County's Riverbend County Park a few miles to the south, flows through Jonathan Dickinson before dipping south again where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean through the Jupiter Inlet. It can be explored by kayak or canoe or by taking a cruise on the Loxahatchee Queen II tour boat (call the park's concession store at 561-746-1466 for details). Canoes and kayaks can be rented at either River Bend Park or at Jonathan Dickinson. The Loxahatchee has both historical and natural significance as one of the last free-flowing rivers in South Florida.
