A History of Fire

Okeeheelee Nature Center, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County

charred trees
Fire historically has shaped Okeeheelee's woodlands. The burn scars you see on these cabbage palms can be found on trees throughout the center's 90 acres. They're the results of prescribed burns intended to mimic the natural cycle of fire that's necessary to maintain healthy ecosystems. In 1991, there was a lightning-caused fire — portions of the center's 2.5 mile trail system commemorate the occasion, the East and West Burn Trails
