What Hugh Taylor Birch Feared

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Fort Lauderdale Beach, Broward County

intracoastal waterway
There are beautiful views of the Intracoastal Waterway along the western edge of Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. This is the northwest corner of the park, marked by a home that extends over the Intracoastal. A seawall extends south, providing quiet spaces for sitting or fishing or whatever you want to do. Beyond the Intracoastal are some large beautiful homes. In fact the park is surrounded by development, which is exactly what Hugh Taylor Birch feared would happen to his beloved estate upon his death. To preserve this land, he willed it to the state of Florida for use as a park. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park opened in 1949.
