Nature's Last Stand

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Fort Lauderdale Beach, Broward County

trail

The largest habitat within Hugh Taylor Birch State Park happens to be tropical marine hammock at 60.22 acres. It also happens to be the last stand of tropical marine hammock within Broward County and one of the largest remaining tracts within South Florida. The Interior Trails (our name) meander through the hammock, which is marked by large, ancient-looking trees like these gumbo limbos. There are absolutely massive seagrape, ficus and mastic trees prominent among the many species found here. In places, the trails border the mangrove swamp seen earlier, and are a bit rugged with large, exposed roots acting as tripping hazards. They also can be a bit wet near the mangroves depending on tides and time of the year.
