You're looking at an illusion of sorts, a cypress dome swamp. The trees rise mountain-like creating the dome effect. They're all about the same age but the water in the swamp becomes progressively deeper and containing more nutrients, allowing trees closer to the center to grow faster than those on the outer edge. If you could hike to the center of the dome, you'd find it absent of trees, the water too deep for cypress to grow.
