Guardians of Tarpon Bay

J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel, Lee County

mangrove swamp
Mangroves, reds, blacks and whites, rim Tarpon Bay and protect the land from the ravages of erosion while providing habitat to a variety of birds and other critters, especially the offspring of fish, crabs and shrimp. In decades past, mangroves were taken for granted, cut down en masse for trivial things like improving a water view. Now, mangroves are seen as so important that a property owner can't even trim the trees without hiring a certified arborist.
