A Refuge Within the Refuge

J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel, Lee County

tree island
Explore Tarpon Bay and you'll find stands of trees amid the bay that provide the perfect roosting places for a variety of birds, including the brown pelicans and cormorants seen in this photo. These tree islands also serve as nesting places, safely away from the hungry maws of land animals like raccoons. As the name says, these are islands formed from trees, here generally mangroves. They grow out of the water and grow together forming masses in the middle of Tarpon Bay
