The Central Marsh

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

boggy end
Along the western side of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary lies the Central Marsh. A spur at the southwestern of corner of the boardwalk sneaks through the bald cypress swamp to a raised platform that affords this view. This is the only place where you get a clean look at the marsh. Refresher course: a swamp is a piece of land that is underwater most of the year and is populated with trees, commonly cypress in Florida. A marsh likewise is underwater most of the year but is populated with shrubs instead of trees. The Central Marsh looks like it could go on forever, but obviously all good things come to an end. If you look closely toward the right side of the photo you'll some kind of transmission tower, almost certainly beyond the bounds of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. One more quick note: this photo was taken during during our first visit to Corkscrew back in 2013. The others in this virtual tour were shot in 2020, a month before the pandemic shut things down.
