Ancient Giants

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees; sometimes you can't see the trees for the forest. Or at least see them in a way that shows off just how massive they really are. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary's centuries-old bald cypress trees can be 130 feet tall, and as big around as 25 feet.  The oldest cypress in Corkscrew are about 600 years old, age-limited by a fire that ravaged the area centuries ago. The oldest bald cypress tree in Florida is called Lady Liberty, in Seminole County, and is at least 2,000 years old. One of the "champion" bald cypress trees in the state has a circumference of more than 46 feet. Note the countless number of bromeliads — airplants — that make their home in the branches this tree. These ancient giants are habitats unto themselves.
