View from the Tower: Endless Wilderness Part 1

Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area

Climb the three-story tower at the end of the Echoche Trail and all you see in every direction is wilderness. Not so much as a cellphone tower or power line in sight. This is the view to the north. It's mostly wet prairie, but you can see slash pines creeping in. The presence of water tends to keep slahs pines out of the prairie, but this seems to be an ecotone, or transition area where habitats are mixed. Or perhaps a change in the area's waterflow has allowed the pines to establish themselves. Another view from the tower here. You can see the Ocean to Lake Trail just before the pine flatwoods in the background.Note the cypress dome swamp in background toward the right edge of the photo. The photo was taken in December and the cypress stand out even at a distance because they're bare.
