Head back to the Loxahatchee Loop Trail and you'll soon come to a conjunction with the Echoche Trail on right. Surface-wise it's more of the same — wide open and rock hard. It's 0.8 miles long, straight as an arrow and connects to the Ocean to Lake Trail. On the right, a series of depression marshes dominate the landscape. Beyond the marsh: what looks to be wet prairie, and behond that, pine flatwoods. Relatively small changes in elevation can create major differences in habitat. The day we shot this photograph was mostly cloudy; by the time we got the Echoche Trail, the clouds had given way to the sun, creating this glorious scene. Echoche, by the way, is a Seminole word meaning many deer. We did, in fact, see deer. Continue walking the trail and you'll come to a viewing tower.
