If you look at an aerial photograph of Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area, one of the first things that pops out is the network of roads that run through it. Most of these roads date back to the days before Loxahatchee Slough became conservation land. Some, we imagine, Palm Beach County's Department of Environmental Resources still use to maintain the natural area. They also provide hikers access to places deep within the heart of the slough. Other roads, unused, are returning to a natural state, though not necessarily their original natural state. The ruts in this road section have become a wet, muddy habitat that sustains water-loving plants like zigzag bladderwort and horned bladderwort, two of Florida's native carnivores. On to our next stop.
