The Loxahatchee Loop Trail now becomes natural surface and narrow. We're entering the heart of Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area, beyond the places where casual visitors venture. The trail is a little rough at first as it cuts through pine flatwoods and the exposed stems of saw palmetto become tripping hazards as they criss-cross the path. This portion of the trail can be a little muddy in the rainy season but not impassably so. Continue the hike and the land opens up a bit, passes through some slash pines and an oak hammock. Eventually we come to a junction; turn left, and continue on the Loop Trail, or turn right and follow a road that the county probably uses for maintenance. For the sake of adventure, We turn right. Gotta be something cool here, right?
