The solid-fuel rocket Aerojet built to take astronauts to the moon in the 1960s and '70s was too large to transport to Cape Canaveral by land, so the plan was to use Florida's canal system to ship it south by barge to Florida Bay and eventually up the Intracoastal waterway to Cape Canaveral. The C-111 canal was to be the starting point for this incredible voyage, but NASA did not select Aerojet's rocket.
Not a good deal for Aerojet, but in the long run a win for environmentalists, birders and outdoor lovers. This is the C-110, which along with the C-111, cuts through Southern Glades Wildlife and Environmental Area. The canals are good places to spot water birds, like herons, cormorants and anhingas and turtles and alligators, possibly even crocodiles farther south. The C-110 and the C-111 are the southernmost canals in Florida.
