This is Blue Hole, a former limestone quarry that is now a freshwater pond, one of the few sources of freshwater on Big Pine Key. It's a lovely spot, and home to alligators, turtles and fish. The surrounding woods harbor a wide range of birds, including kestrels, green herons, catbirds, warblers and a whole lot more. There's also a short trail that wraps around a portion of the pond and a small observation platform. It sits not far from the Watson Trail. The tree framing the right side of the photo is poisonwood, we believe, while the left top is keys blackbead. NEXT PHOTO
