Along one of the natural surface trails in Fern Forest Nature Center, you'll come across a quiet canal that blends into the nature around it in a way that makes it seem like it's always been there. Always might be a stretch, but decades, certainly. It's a reminder that Fern Forest was once known as the Cypress Creek Hammock, part of a designated drainway or flood way intended to keep neighboring fields and pastures dry. No doubt you'll find alligators, frogs, turtles and snakes along its pathway if you look close enough. The plants you see floating on the water are spatterdock, relatives of water lilies, but without the spectacular flowers.
