Into the Hinterlands

Big Cypress National Preserve, Ochopee, Collier County

wide open trail
One thing that sets Big Cypress National Preserve apart is its ease of access for visitors. Finding a hiking trail into the back country is as easy as pulling into one of the rest areas along Interstate 75 west of the Broward County line and east of State Road 29. However, you do need a permit to do so whether you're on a day excursion or planning to camp overnight. The permits are free and are available either online or at the trailheads. The permits are a matter of safety. The trail in the above photo is accessible on the north side Interstate 75 at the rest stop closest to the Broward County line. There are six access points along I-75 between the Broward line and SR 29, three on each side of the highway. There are other hiking trails and camp grounds within Big Cypress as well. Consult a map or the Big Cypress website for details.
