A hike to the old Bahia Honda Bridge is almost mandatory if you visit Bahia Honda State Park. A trail leads to a portion of the bridge and its breathtaking views, including this one of the historic structure.
When the Florida Department of Highways opened the replacement bridge in 1972, it demolished sections of the old bridge at either end to open up the channel to boaters and to keep pedestrians off the main section.
You can see the old highway atop the tressel; when engineers converted the bridge for automobile traffic during the 1930s, they placed the highway on top of the tressels because the old railway was deemed too narrow for two-way traffic. The bridge that replaced it can be seen on the right.
