A River Runs Through It

Apoxee Trail, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County

puddled water on trail
The Apoxee Trail becomes the Apoxee River at this point. A bit of an exaggeration and some fun with the title of one our favorite movies, but the trail does get quite wet. We shot this photo in late April, toward the end of incredibly dry dry season. Portions of the trail were mucky up until this point, but easily passable. But the water here covered the entire trail and left no way of getting around it with dry feet. On the other hand, had we hiked the trail a week earlier, it would have been totally dry. More importantly, from a habitat standpoint, note that slash pines are becoming the dominant canopy element here.
