We hiked north along a canal that essentially marked the western limits of this section of Allapattah Flats, then cut southeast through this pine flatwoods. Judging from the diameter of the trunks, these trees are relatively young, probably planted as part of the efforts to restore the wildlife management area. The landscape at Allapattah surely will change as restored habitats mature, making it in essence, a work in progress.
