Cypress Swamps

Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area

wilderness

The South Florida slash pine, the tree that built this part of Florida, is the most dominant tree species within Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area. According to Palm Beach County's Department of Environmental Resources, pine flatwoods cover more than 50 percent of Loxahatchee Slough's nearly 13,000 acres, but in sections, particularly along PGA Boulevard, pond cypress and cypress swamps dominate. We took this photo at the kayak launch and trail near the Karen T. Marcus Sandhill Access Park, our next stop on the tour. The C-18 canal, the access park and the Bluegill Trail are directly behind us. Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area has both dome and strand swamps, the main difference between the two neatly defined in their names. Strand swamps may have flowing water, whereas a dome swamp will not.
