The Borrow Pit

Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area

borrow pit lakes

Borrow pits are manmade lakes or ponds, created when the soil and rock are removed for use as fill for construction projects and the water table fills the hole that's left behind. Don't know why this one occurred, perhaps for construction of the nearby Beeline Highway many decades ago. In any case, this borrow pit is a beautiful spot. There is a short fishing pier that juts out into the lake — fishing is permitted in the Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area, but catch-and-release only — and there are places along the bank that provide easy access for fishing. The canal along the Loxahatchee Loop Trail continues north as does the trail itself, eventually curling around the lake and some wet prairies. For our purposes, we head south, carefully looking for birds and flowers we might have missed on our way earlier. We head to our next stop.
