Between the dunes and the coastal scrub lies this strand of forest, a marine hammock, full of tropical hardwoods and shrubs. Gumbo limbo, aka the tourist tree, strangler figs, poisonwood and seagrapes are common here, interspersed with Hercules club, blolly, saw palmetto and wild coffee. Red bay is common along the western edge of the forest where it begins to transition to coastal scrub. This place is especially important to migrating birds, who use it as a place of refuge in times of rough weather and to fuel up on the multitude of berries present — Photo by David Sedore
